I joined the Begian Battalion on 28 May 1953. We were camped at PANGORI just accross the HANTANG gang. We were attached to 15th.Infantry 3rd ID. When the Division pulled out in 54 our Battalion moved to Unchon Ni and was attached to the 17th. INF. 7th ID till june 15 when we were repatriated to Belgium. There was no love lost between us and the BUFFALO POLICE whom raided the ville at night for curfew violators. I got nabbed 2 times and got 4 days in the brig twice. Our CO appologised profoundly but had no choise for he had to report to the DIV.
I returned to Korea as a Civilian to get married and stayed till 1968.
One of my first jobs was to sell OB to the US Military.
I set out toeards Uijongbu but decided to try a little further down the road, passed several camps even passed Tongduchon and still had'nt the nerve to try to sell. End of the line was Camp St.Barbarra, drove all the way to the end where there was a club on top of a cliff and thank God the Manager, Sgt Welch ordered 25 cases ( 24 big bottles a case packed in straw. I sold ANOTHER 250 cases on the way back and MR OB was born. I STILL WONDER WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ME IF THE GOOD SERGEANT had not places that order?

Welcome to the forum. I was in Korea 4 times, with the 1st being in 1960-61 as a Truck Driver in the 7th Inf Division. Was assigned to the 17th Transportation Bn at Camp Casey, but TDY to Camp Kaiser for 3 months. Loved the job, and enjoyed driving all the roads north of Uijongbu. Back then, places like TDC were very much like Dodge City in the cowboy movies. There was no SOFA agreement then, so things got a little wild. Where was PANGORI located? They change the village names so often, it is hard to research places.

I returned in 1969-70, and saw things had started to change south of Uijongbu, but the villages near the DMZ were still the "wild west". I spent most of this tour at Cp St Barbara with a 12 man detachment from D Co 4th Maint Bn, and had a blast there. The roads north of Camp Casey were still dirt then, but blacktopping them had just started. We loaded up in our 2 1/2 ton van, and went to Cp Stanley for pay and any needed administrative stuff once a month. Other than that, only telephone contact. Was GREAT!

My 3rd tour was in 78-79, down south at Cp Humphries. Had to start acting civilized down there. Smile 4th tour was in 81-82 at Camp Red Cloud. Korea had moved from a 3rd world country, to a semi modern one. A lot better living, both on and off post, but I missed the action of the early years.

If you have any photos, post them up.
